I got a intern offer in one of the oil and gas industry companies. Position title is SWM (Single Well Monitoring) operator. I'm not sure if it will give me a good mechanical experience or not. If someone knows anything, please help me out. Thanks! Well my gut reaction is, that it would provide some help but not allot. Let me explain... Below is the job description and qualifications for a REAL operator: Single Well Monitoring — Control Room Operator
Description: Company's Heavy Oil and Gas business unit is seeking a Single Well Monitoring Control Room Operator to join their Field Operations team either at [xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx]. Reporting to the Area Superintendent, the incumbent will be required to monitor remote well alarms and react to specific conditions as they occur. This position is a 10-hour day shift (8 days on/6 days off). Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to: • Monitor single well facilities in the Heavy Oil Business Unit • Review single well monitoring alarms regularly and adjust setpoints in consultation with Field Operations • Work collaboratively with Operations staff to keep Operations running smoothly • Ensure safe work practices and adhere to company policy and procedures • Respond to SCADA alarms • Organize various jobs such as flushes, loads & coil work as required • Contribute ideas to enhance production and lower operating costs • Analyze SCADA trends Qualifications: The ideal candidate has the following qualifications: • Minimum Grade 12 Diploma or equivalent. • 4th class Power Engineering Certificate, Gas Process Operator Certificate, or Heavy Oil Operations Technician diploma would be an asset. The key part here, is that college education is ONLY an asset for doing the real job. Meaning it does not require an engineer, or even a college graduate for this position. This is enough for me to question how beneficial it will be for you.• Previous experience in a control room environment would be an asset. • Some operating experience preferred but not essential. • Experience with Production Volume Capture (PVR) or Field Data Capture (DDI) and/or SAP would be an asset. This statement leads me to believe that you will gain experience with these items at this job. This might be useful.• Strong communication, interpersonal, trouble shooting, and organizational skills • Ability to work effectively in a team environment, and willingness to accept increased operational responsibilities • The ability to work independently with minimal supervision • A high level of attention to detail • Safety conscientious • Proficiency with PC's and experience with Word, Excel and e-mail • A valid driver's license Now I did see the description for a Summer intern too, and it reads very similar to the above description :
Summer Student - Engineering (Single Well Monitoring)
Description: [xxxxxxxxxxx] has several Engineering Summer Student positions in the department of Heavy Oil and Gas - Single Well Monitoring which is available for the [xxxxxxxxxxxxxx] term. These positions are located in our [xxxxxxxxxx] main office. These positions are open to post-secondary students who are interested in gaining experience in the oil and gas industry and who will be returning to school in [xxxxxxxxxxx]. Please note the shift for this position may include 10 hour days, only 8 days on and 6 days off or 12 days and nights, 7 days on 7 days off.
In this position your responsibilities may include: • Providing vacation relief for single well control room operators • Managing and responding to well and facility alarms collaboratively with operators • Managing priority by dispatching and tracking Pressure, Flushby and Coil Tubing trucks as they are required • Following up on all service and optimization initiatives within 24 hours to monitor success • Working closely with senior operators and engineers to find solutions for problem wells • Identifying and monitoring all maintenance work specific to the Single Well Monitoring SCADA system infrastructure • Creating service work orders in SAP • Ensuring safe work practices and the adherence to company policy and procedures • Providing updated reports on MS Word, Excel, SAP • Assisting with the development and maintenance of the Single Well Monitoring operating procedural documentation Qualifications: Our ideal candidate will have the following qualifications: • Preference will be given to post-secondary students who are currently enrolled in an Engineering program • Previous oil well operating experience would be an asset • Ability to work in a strong team environment • Mechanical aptitude is an asset This statement however suggests that they desire a Mechanically inclined engineer for the position. But their prior posting for the full-time position still leads me to believe that and engineer is over-kill for this position. • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills • Excellent problem solving skills and learning abilities • Valid safety certificates would be an asset (training will be provided if necessary) • Strong computer skills (MS Office) • Working knowledge of SAP and PVR would be an asset • Experience with SCADA would be an asset • A valid driver's license.
In my opinion from what I see thus far in the descriptions, I'd say this job really doesn't necessitate a college student much less a college graduate. However, that being said, it does provide you a door into the Oil and Gas industry if that is what you truly want to do. If the Oil and Gas Industry is your objective, then any first hand experience can be very beneficial and might make this a worth while internship.
